Today we took a plane ride from Guayaquil to the Galapagos Islands. Once we arrived on Balta and passed through security, which checked to ensure that no contamination would occur and pose a threat to the islands, we boarded a bus, water taxi, and then finally our bus with the end destination of Puerto Ayora. We made several stops along the way at El Gemelos and El Chato Tortoise Reserve, where we had lunch. Our guide in the Galapagos, Jonathan, provided us with a lot of information about the tortoises including how to differentiate between males and females by their tails, males being rounded and longer and females being pointed, and their lifespan. Tortoises are able to feel vibrations from the ground to warn them if there is danger when sleeping. Later that day, we took a hike around Santa Cruz, stopping at the beach and salt marshes and seeing the diversity of plant life on the island. We then came back and walked around town. |
